One of the most significant qualifiers in home hunting is family; and family often means children. Do you have them? Do you want them? If you do, schools are a constant consideration. In a world where evidence of a higher education has become near a prerequisite for the job market, parents want to prepare their children as swiftly and efficiently as possible.
Parents commonly use district rankings to dictate their scope when vying for the right neighborhood. Schools are most commonly ranked by the following:
Student/Teacher Ratio
Teacher/Support Staff Ratio
Combined Reading/Language Arts & Math Proficiency
In Ontario, schools may be omitted from ranking due to lack of data rather than error. As a requirement of the data gathered is review of the EQAO testing executed in Grade 3, 6 and 9, if the school does not have data from both grades 3 and 6 (such as schools for Kindergarten to Grade 5), they are commonly omitted from the ranking entirely. This is an important consideration if you are concerned that the school in your preferred neighbourhood didn't make the list.
Student/Teacher ratio can be applied to more schools and offers a clearer result as to the quality of education offered. Schools often go to great lengths to ensure that their EQAO scores meet or exceed requirements, but often at a cost to the students long term retention of the content. So much so, that as of 2017, educational administrators in the province have begun to discuss future alteration or replacement of EQAO testing for something that serves the students better and provides more valid information to parents and teachers.
Parents looking to keep their children safe and prepared, know that you are recognized and valued. Regardless of the data you review for your children's well being, good luck with the upcoming Staples run. We salute you.
